Skylar "SKY" Noel Jenckes-Our Surprise Home Birth
Whew! What a night! James III slept through all of the comotion, lights & drama- even when the police & fire fighters arrived 10 minutes later. Thank you Jesus for blessing us with Skylar & keeping us all safe & healthy without complications.
Now here is the detailed-quick version of the story......Be aware that details are details- this is a real birth story with some squeeky details.
James' reactions/side of the story are listed below in flourescent green.
You know it's funny because my doctor 2 months prior told me to get an emergency kit ready just in case I don't make it to the hospital since I was so fast also with James III. I had envisioned a home birth weeks prior to this and thought how nice it would be to have one, but could not get the courage to do it. I had others tell me- why not just have a home birth.... you almost delivered in the car with James III- you might as well just stay home.
We did not plan a home birth, although at one point I did ask James if he would consider one.
I was approximately 38 weeks. I delivered standing/squatting holding on to the vanity of the bathroom sink w/ only James & I at the birth. All of my contractions lasted about 15-20 seconds- not the normal 1 minute plus that they tell you.
4pm-Water leakage, about 2 tbsp.- I did not call the Dr, but I did call my friend/doula Tina who was there for James III's birth. We decided not to go to the hospital yet. There was no need at this point.
Braxton Hicks for the next few hours- nothing to brag about or say that this is the day. Nothing too intense, that I could not talk through.
11pm- Noticed the Braxton Hicks moved up a notch. I twisted and turned through some of them, but was in denial that I was truly in labor.
12 Midnight- Braxton Hicks were progressing, so I would say this has turned into real contractions. But no need to run to the doctor until they are about 5 minutes apart right?
12:30- contraction- I used my rice sock & tennis ball to relieve the pain and that was awesome. Lost a small amount of mucous plug-Called Tina for an update.
1pm- contraction- rice sock again & now we are down to the minutes
1:15-contraction-soothing music
13 minutes until the next contraction-hot shower, music still on, dimmed all lights during the entire process.
10 minutes apart until the next contraction- music still on, dimmed lights, rice sock, swaying etc.
*** somewhere around this time- 2:05- James says boldy, " We are not having this baby at home- I am not having a home birth- let's get you in the car." Of course, I can't move at this point. I am like a statue by the sink. James- EDDIE! EDDIE!- (yelling at our neighbor who is next door. There is no way he could have heard him unless he was in the backyard)
James- " FOCUS CJ FOCUS. You have got to work with me here. FOCUS CJ FOCUS. We are not having this baby at home."
After this... everything was super-fast, and just a blur.
every 20-30 second with only 5 SECONDS IN-BETWEEN to breathe & to do #2 after each contraction( my body was emptying itself like it did with my son) I could not move at all. Firmly planted on the ground.
every 10 seconds contractions" "
James walks away to throw towels on the bed( I found this out later that he knew at this point I was not going to make it to the hospital) As he turns around- OH MY GOSH! THE BABY IS HERE, THE BABY IS HERE, TINA, THE BABY IS HERE, CALL 911!!! ( Tina is on speaker phone)
The cord was around her neck, I panicked as I thought I had a dead baby looking at me.....I tugged on it a little and found it was loose. ((whew))
2:25ish- I had to do a huge #2 and then I said " I have to get this thing out!"
2:30 ish- push #1-head out, push #2- body out- I made sure the head did not go anywhere (smile)- James caught the body as I pushed her out. He was on the phone with paramedics to get other instructions on what to do, since no medical help was there yet.
- I am just holding Sky & praying that the medical team hurries over. Umbilical cord is still attached to both of us, just dangling.
- James used a shoelace to tie the umbilical cord. We did not cut it. (instructions from the paramedics on the phone)
- We had the bulb syringe in our emergency kit and used that.
- James found all towels we could and wrapped her up and also threw them on the ground to clean the area.
- We washed her eyes, nose, etc., with a warm cloth.
2:45 ish the police /ambulance came etc.
All of my prayers were answered for this delivery. James III slept through all of this comotion - can you believe it? Everything I thought/worried about God answered. ( who would watch James III, please make it to be in the middle of the night, I hope I am not alone and James is home with me etc.- God answered. I Thank God for our beautfiul baby girl.
For more details & especially James' side- you will just have to visit us. We can now look back and laugh at some funny moments. ( I kept turning the lights off, while James kept turning them on- back and forth- you got to hear about this one and other stuff.
Facts:
- 100% healthy delivery
- No Tearing of any sort
- We gave her a perfect 10 for the agar score :-)
- James II will be listed as the attendant/doctor that delivered on the birth certificate( they can't say me because I did not catch the baby- BUT WAIT!!!! I DID ALL OF THE WORK :-)
- James III slept through the 5 firefighters/2 police men that were in the house and also the 2 times I was loud. I did not scream, but was a little loud.
- James finalized the name with me last week. Skylar came from something on tv and we can't remember where. Noel is my Godfathers name and we felt it represented the union of both he and my lovely Godmother- Ruby... So Skylar Noel it was.
